The AFP reports that Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has launched research into developing safety airbags for motorcycles, according to uncited sources for a Japanese newspaper. Honda has plans to make airbags available for motorcycles in three years.
The airbags are said to fit under the handlebars.
I imagine its worth researching. But if you're going 60mph and hit something hard enough to engage the airbags, I tend to think that the airbags would do nothing to slow down your momentum.
If anything, what causes the most injuries are not so much head-on collisions, but people losing control of their bikes, either locking up their wheels, going through a curve too fast, hitting debris on the road, or a tire blow out.
