Pearl Hoel - The First Lady of Sturgis Dies

The Rapid City Journal reported today that Pearl Hoel, affectionately referred to many as the "First Lady of Sturgis" died Sunday at Sturgis Community Health Care Center at the age of 99.

Pearl Hoel cooked dinner for all 150 people who attended the first Sturgis motorcycle event in 1938. In 2004, she remained a high-profile supporter of the Sturgis motorcycle rally, an event that now draws as many as half a million bikers from all over the world.

"Everyone in town referred to her as the First Lady of Sturgis," Pepper Massey-Swan, head of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, said. "She loved the event, she loved the people. I don't what we'll do without her."
The article goes on to describe how Pearl and her husband "Pappy" were involved in getting the famed Sturgis Rally started back in 1938.

Who's going to be the first come out with a Pearl patch or pin?

  • I'd like to owen a Pearl patch or pin...I'm glad to see woman are being reconized with The Sturgis Ralley other than a Wet T Shrt Contest...We have been going on and off for the ninth time this year and I was apauled at the price gouging the State is now being recoonized for. They need to understand some of us save all year to make this Ralley and come a long way to get there, I think 8.00 for a hamburger is a slap in the face for the sisters and brothers who make this run. We stay at Glenco and got there on Thur. before the Ralley we went into the BP on the conner and a pack of Hotdoga were 1.29 by Tues, after it started they had gone up to 4.29... that's Bullsh----. They also took down there hot food menue with the prices so they could gouge there too.Sorry but we help bring the town to what it is for nine years and watched it grow...the bottom line, with the amount of people attending there is no need for outragouse price inflation..Maybe all that go should BOYCOT for one year and HUNBLE the Town to what it once was...Mary Steele Gainesville GA>
