This Guy's Pipes Are Still Too Quiet

>> Wednesday, May 31, 2006

I received the following e-mail today from a reader...

HARLEY DAVIDSON INSTALLED SCREAMING EAGLE SLIP ON. THE TONE IS TOO MILD. TOO QUITE. I CAN'T EVEN WAKE MY NEIGHBORS...

MY QUESTION. CAN I REMOVE THE BAFFLES THEN USE THE SCREAMING EAGLE "EFI
RACE TUNER KIT" TO RECONFIGURE MY COMPUTER INJECTION SYSTEM... WILL I RISK HURTING THE BIKE?
A buddy of mine once told me that if you replace the head pipes with an aftermarket set, it'll be a lot louder.

He won't hurt the bike by removing the baffles, as long as he remaps the EFI.

Anyone else care to comment?

Removing the baffles will change the backpressure. Whether it will be enough to hurt the engine is something you need a meter to measure.

As long as he gets the EFI correctly remapped (or rejet if the bike is carbed), it won't hurt the engine, but it will seriously hurt performance. I definitely wouldn't recommend it unless noise is all he cares about.

There are several aftermarket exhausts, both slip-on and full, that will be louder than SE without hurting performance. I would say go with one of those or risk looking like a noob poser.

To be more specific, removing the baffles can cause issues with both reversion and backpressure, which will give you a major drop in the powerband right at the rpms you use most.

You only need to worry about engine damage if the fuel mixture is too lean , but it will be unless you remap or rejet.

Remove the baffels with a re-map or a suitable EFI tuning system like te BMI system...check your plugs they will tell the story

Glad I'm not that jackasses neighbor! New loud pipe legislation is being discussed every single day. Way to go, Einstein!
