Should've Bought the Ultra!

by Steve
Monday, May 14, 2007

Harley Davidson Electra Glide Ultra ClassicHow many times have fellow Harley owners said this?

You get some guy who buys a Street Glide, and then slowly starts adding stuff to it, next thing you know, he should have bought an Ultra Classic to begin with. Here's someone's story posted on HDForums...

Man, I have been back and forth 100 times. I started out wanting an Ultra, negotiated a price with the dealer, and then started to second guess myself... I began looking at the 07 SG and just loved the way it looks... I convinced myself that I didn't need all of the "extras" that the Ultra came with and go for the SG. I called the dealer and put a deposit on the SG.

Then I started adding a few "extras" that I wanted. Sissy bar/Pad for the little woman, Cruise Control for me, Passing lamp kit, etc. Before I knew it, I was spending more than I would have spent for a brand new Ultra where all of those things come standard! Arghhh..

So I called my now very frustrated dealer and asked him to switch my deposit over to a new Red/Black Ultra. I would like to know what someone else requested in a different thread... Is there a way to make the tour pak a quick detach setup so that I can remove it when I don't have a passenger or need the trunk?
You can read the whole thread, and read the countless times people tell him that he should've bought an Ultra...

I bought an Ultra Classic a little over a year ago, and haven't really regretted it. A buddy of mine tells me I should've bought a Road Glide instead, because the fixed-fairing makes turning more easier. I'm sure he's right on that. But then I would've had to buy the tour pak, the quick release kit, and the comfier seat to make the wife happy. The Ultra Classic takes you right where you want to be from the start.

Seems like it's cheaper to just buy a bike with everything on it. You can always take stuff off of your bike, and still have that piece laying around when you need to put it back on.

Harley-Davidson V-Rod Street Glide

by Steve
Tuesday, April 17, 2007

A rumor has it that Harley-Davidson may be thinking of offering a new bike for 2008, the "V-Rod Street Glide"...

Photos are courtesy of Instigator Cycles, Temecula, CA.

This bike pictured above was brought to the San Diego Motorcycle & Hot Rod show last weekend courtesy of San Diego Harley-Davidson.

It's the Street Rod, but fitted with the Batwing fairing, touring hardbags, touring fenders, and floorboards.

In fact, San Diego Harley-Davidson has this motorcycle featured on its website among it's customized offerings. My understanding is that the "V-Rod Street Glide" is a creation of San Diego Harley-Davidson, but that the Motor Company may be looking at making this a factory production.

Just a rumor, though...

Road Glides are Hot, Street Glides are Not

by Steve

Street GlideApparently, Harley dealers are having trouble selling Street Glides, but can't seem to keep enough Road Glides in stock.

Some of us from our riding club rode to several Harley dealers yesterday in an attempt to find some Road Glides. One of our members wants to buy one.

None of them had any 2007 models on the showroom floor. Each dealer had two used 2006 models, however. Only one dealer had a 2007 Road Glide, but it was still in their shop waiting to be prepped.

The sales manager at Biggs Harley Davidson in San Marcos told us that for whatever reason, everyone wants Road Glides now. On the other hand, he's having trouble selling Street Glides. They have lots of 2007 Street Glides in stock.

At one time, Street Glides were all the rage, but now, they're as cold as last week's meat loaf.

He said he's had to do things like adding key pieces of chrome, adding some pin striping, or even repainting them altogether, just to get people to buy them. If he adds all the right enhancements, people buy them. But as they are, they just collect dust.

If I had my choice, I'd take the Road Glide. The Street Glide is designed for looks. The Road Glide offers more usability. Perhaps the Street Glide is losing it's novelty value?
