Hollister Independence Rally May End

by Steve
Wednesday, November 23, 2005

The City of Hollister, California voted Monday to end its contract with the Hollister Independence Rally Committee, the organization that's been putting together the Hollister Independence Rally.

It's not yet known what the City Council plans to do, whether to hire a different group, organize the event itself, or scrap the rally altogether.

City council members cited financial and public safety concerns. Councilwoman Monica Johnson stated...

"It really comes down to: Can we continue to afford it the way we've been doing it? Bottom line: We can't."
Last summer's rally, which drew about 120,000 people, left Hollister with a debt of $360,000 which has to be paid out of the city's general fund. As for public safety, the Hollister Police Chief said that he could not guarantee his department could provide adequate staffing at the next rally due to escalating violence between rival motorcycle clubs.
