Man Loses Hearing for Trying to Help Biker

by Steve
Sunday, April 20, 2008

Perhaps this story may be a sign of the times in India.

The Express News Service of India reports that a man in India was sitting inside of an office building when he happened to look out of his window and witnessed an accident involving a car and motorcyle. He rushed out to help the victims. While trying to provide aid, another motorcyclist happened to stop as well, and promptly slapped the guy on the ear, popping his eardrum, and rendering him unable to hear in that ear...

"Without having knowledge of the accident, the man abused me, blamed me for the mishap and slapped me. He was in no mood to listen (to) anything. Some more people gathered at the spot. So I called the police control room on 100 number for help," he added.

"Instead of providing some immediate help, the control room police asked me to approach the nearest police station, which was not possible because I was surrounded by people who were holding me responsible for the mishap," he said.

I don't know what the state of road rage is like in India, but I wonder if it's pretty bad. Sounds like commuters there operate with a hair-trigger response to any kind of negative stimulus.

Whatever those folks drink in the morning, they might want to water it down.

Why Harley Can't Get into India

by Steve
Sunday, September 23, 2007

The Hindustan published an article that sheds light on why Harley Davidson hasn't been able to find more success in India.

Apparently, it hinges the approval of the "Heavy Industries Ministry", otherwise it appears that Milwaukee has clearance to start selling its 883 Sportster there...

According to government sources, the DGFT is amending its export-import policy to make way for bikes with engine capacities in excess of 500 cc, but it remains to be seen if the Heavy Industries Ministry gives its nod to the DGFT proposal.
Imagine if Harley can get India's doors to open for its bikes.

40 Motorcycles Across A Man's Belly

by Steve
Thursday, October 26, 2006

Riding a motorcycle over a manA man in India decided to let 40 motorcycles ride across his belly today. Apparently, he wants his place in the Guiness Book of World Records.

I didn't know the Guiness Book of World Records had this as a category.

First, Nayak let 40 motorcycles ride over the middle of his body as he laid prone on the ground.

Nayak had the drivers aim for his stomach, but in some cases, the cycles missed and went a lot lower on his abdomen.
What would have sucked is if 40 motorcycles rode across this man's belly, and no one bothered to report it. But as things would turn out, India is the place where jackass stunts make you famous, and blogs like this one eat the stuff up.

NBC10, who reported this story, says not to do this at home. Righty-O!

Harley Davidson in Vietnam and India

by Steve
Saturday, May 27, 2006

Vietnamese bikersThe Associated Press reports on Harley Davidson's quest to expand its reach into Asia.

Vietnam is apparently one of the countries they're eyeing. Vietnam? Who there can afford a Road King Classic or even a 883 Sportster? Vietnamese look at motorcycles strictly as utility. They pack tons of cargo on their 125cc bikes, and even haul the whole family, including the wife and four kids.

Why would they spend more money on a Sportster that carries the same load?

India, on the other hand, seems like a good call. Folks there are taking up all the high-tech jobs these days, from computer programming, database administration, to tech support. I'm sure they can afford a Harley, and can grasp the concept of joy riding.

The question I have, is will they wear leather?

Indian Man to Break Hands-Free Motorcycle Riding Record

by Steve
Friday, February 11, 2005

Gautam MeenaA guy in India is confident he'll break the world's distance record for riding a motorcycle without holding on to the handle bars. His name is Gautam Meena, and he's a police constable in Jaipur city, in northwest India.

He said: "From Jaipur to Delhi is about 250 kilometres. I have covered this route many times. I have complete mastery over my bike, and can ride non-stop without touching the handle bars."
250 kilometers is about 155 miles. The present world's record is 5.5 kilometers, about 3.4 miles.

He says he spends about 8 to 10 hours a day practicing riding his motorcycle standing up, not sitting down. And this guy is a policeman!

I think it would be cool to see motorcycle cops in the USA cruising the freeways while standing up on their bikes!
