Charity Ride Tries to be Cager-Friendly
by Steve
Thursday, April 12, 2007
The Modesto Bee reports that organizers of the annual Sierra Hope Ride are working with police and the California Highway Patrol, to ensure the procession of riders moves out of town more quickly than before...To speed up the ride's passage through Riverbank, riders will slow down at Al's Furniture on McHenry Avenue before entering Riverbank from Modesto. A short delay for riders at the head of the pack will keep bikes closer together. The dense pack will move through Riverbank about 17 minutes faster than last year, which took 47 minutes, Police Chief Tim Beck said.
At issue are complaint from townsfolks seeking to leave town for summer vacations, and experiencing severe traffic delays from the rally riders.
Keep in mind, the purpose of the ride is to raise money for a Muscular Dystrophy charity.
You know, residents don't seem to mind when a Christmas parade shuts down a major thoroughfare, but when traffic is delayed because of a charity ride complaints are filed.
Kudos to city officials for trying to work out a solution, rather than shutting down the event.

Motorcycle Run to Protect Our Borders
by Steve
Monday, October 16, 2006
October 22, 2006 is date when the 100-mile "Brotherhood of the Border" motorcycle run commences to show a force of support to our nation's border patrol.
Riders who support a tougher stance against illegal immigration are invited to participate in the free, escorted, run to secure the border starting at 9:00 am. The ride begins at the Southern Arizona Biker Rodeo, Big Boys Arena Bar, 250 N. Prickly Pear Ave., in Benson, AZ, and ends at Helldorado Days in Tombstone. Sign in is 6:00am to 9:00am, with speeches at 9:00am, and the ride beginning promptly at 9:30am.
The ride, sponsored by the American Freedom Riders Brotherhood of the Border, is endorsed by various congressman and anti-illegal immigration groups, as well as the Border Patrol Union Local 2544. Members of the patrol will also participate in the ride.
Prior to the run, MCEE Congressional candidate Randy Graf will introduce nationally known speakers including, Jim Gilchrist - Minuteman Project Founder, T.J. Bonner - National Border Patrol Union President, Andy Ramirez - Friends of the Border Patrol Founder; Yeh Ling-Ling - well known author and academic, and supporter and activist, Cindy Kolb.
"The purpose of this ride is for men and women to combine the passion of riding the open roads with the urgent need to inform politicians at all levels that we will no longer stand by while the integrity and sovereignty of our nation is compromised by the adverse social and economic effects of illegal immigration," said Danny Smith, who, along with Rusty Childress, formed the American Freedom Riders. "We demand that all elected officials uphold their oath of office and legislate in the best interest of the legal citizens of our state and our country."
The scenic ride will be filmed via an airplane, as well as on the ground. The live cybercast of some anticipated 1,000 motorcyclists will also be a part of a film documentary in support of Friends of the Border Patrol.
Participants in the America Freedom Riders Brotherhood of the Border are also encouraged to attend a panel discussion with prominent experts in immigration law and enforcement, Saturday, Oct. 21st from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Windemere Hotel, 2047 S. Highway 92 in Sierra Vista, AZ. The event is open to the public. The cost is $30 and includes lunch and a tour of the border at Douglas, Arizona and Naco, Mexico, where participants can view, first hand, where more than 500,000 illegal aliens were apprehended in 2006.
For more information about the motorcycle ride or links to other anti-illegal immigration information go to www.americanfreedomriders.com or contact Danny Smith at 520-455-9323 or email happyappy45@yahoo.com.

Love Ride 23 Is Now Open
by Steve
Thursday, July 06, 2006
Organizers of Love Ride 23 announced today that online registration is now open.
The Love Ride is scheduled for November 12, 2006. It starts at the Harley-Davidson dealer in Glendale, CA, and ends at Castaic Lake.
Proceeds benefit a laundry list of good causes.
If you're not familiar with the Love Ride, it's the largest one-day motorcycle event in the world. It's the ride where Hollywood's Harley-riding celebrities dust off their bikes and recharge their free spirits with 30,000 other folks.
I did this ride a couple years ago. It's quite a spectacle, seeing all the clubs, all the out-of-staters, and all the RUBs. There are people keeping their cameras ready for a celebrity sighting, and lots of people dressed up wanting to be seen.
The actual ride, however, is not totally organized. It's only organized up until you get on the freeway, and then it's a mad scramble up the I-5. Imagine 20,000 bikes pouring on to the freeway, racing past cars and trucks, splitting lanes, just to beat the motorcycle gridlock at the lake!
If you haven't gone before, I think it's great to experience this at least once. It does benefit a lot of good causes. But be careful when you're on the freeway.

West Coast Thunder - A Disaster!
by Steve
Sunday, April 30, 2006
Our riding club participated in the first phase of West Coast Thunder VII, which involves the "Thunder over the Empire" air show, last Saturday. It's an event organized by Skip Fordyce Harley Davidson, of Riverside, CA.
I think most everyone in our group felt ripped off. I imagine a lot of other bikers did too.
My wife and I paid $30.00 each to participate, which includes a t-shirt, patch, ride through March Field Air Reserve Base, and a day watching the Air Force's Thunderbirds do their air show.
Everything went ok until after the ride through March Field. They parked us way in the back of parking lot. This made everyone walk a mile to the gates of the air show. Skip Fordyce made everyone believe they had a arranged an upfront parking space, instead they put us way in the behind all the cars.
Here's what they're website said about parking:Staging will begin near Riverside National Cemetery. You will proceed to the back entrance at March Air Reserve Base. Then you will be guided into Air Show Center by an airborne Vietnam era Huey H-I Helicopter. You'll then be escorted by that Huey down the runway, in front of thousands of air show fans. You will then be parked on the tarmac in our own preferred parking area. You will be among the static display featuring B-1 Bombers, F-117 Stealth Fighters and an SR-71 Blackbird to name just a few! From there you'll be able to enjoy the entertainment, food and vendors of all kinds. Truly a ride to remember. All registrants will receive a commemorative embroidered patch in recognition of this event.
I guess when we read that they had a "preferred parking area", we didn't know that Skip Fordyce preferred to park a mile away. One biker gal, who already had kidney failure, nearly collapsed under the sun having to walk the distance. Like everyone else, she probably wouldn't have attended if not for Skip Fordyce telling everyone about the "preferred parking" they arranged for us.
Notice that the message also says we'd be able to enjoy food. A lot of bikers took this to mean that the money they paid to get into this event would include free lunch. Not so. You had to buy everything.
The next disaster was that Skip Fordyce failed to warn all the bikers that the Air Force staff would be checking everyone who entered, confiscating cigarettes, lighters and other contraband. One biker by the name of "Ledhed" had his cigarettes and lighter taken away. He was told he could get them back afterwards, but afterwards when he went to claim them, he was told they had been disposed of. He began to complain, when Air Force security began walking towards him.
The problem wasn't the confiscation, but Skip Fordyce not warning anyone about this. I mean, how many bikers carry lighters? Interestingly, not all bikers had their cigarettes and lighters taken away. Apparently, the security staff did a very poor job of enforcing their policies.
The explanation for confiscating cigarettes and lighters? Well they said the air field has oil and fuel there, and they didn't want it igniting. But guess what? During the air show, they ignited bombs in a simulated bombing display. And they had several barbecue vendors with barbecues working full blast. What gives?
But the worst rip off of all was that the whole air show was free to public anyways. Why the Hell did we pay Skip Fordyce $30.00 each to get in on this thing, when thousands of cagers and their families were already getting in free, and getting better parking than we did?
I guess what we got was a t-shirt, a patch, and the opportunity to ride on the air field. Woo Hoo. The money does go to a good cause, the maintenance of Riverside National Cemetery, I suppose one should always look at it that way.
But if we bikers are donating money to get into this air show, why in the Hell did the cagers (who didn't pay), get better parking?
I spoke to another biker today who participated in this, and he said he's no longer supporting Skip Fordyce Harley Davidson.

3rd Annual Ride for Ryan
by Steve
Tuesday, March 07, 2006
The 3rd Annual Ride for Ryan takes place April 21 through April 24, 2006. It starts in Southern California, and heads out to Arizona, where you get to spend two full days of riding some really great roads.
You don't have to start out in California, however. Riders in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, can hook up with the group in Flagstaff or Mesa. Check the ride itinerary.
I went on this ride last year, and wrote up an article about it. This ride is actually a ride, that is you don't realize you're participating in an event. There are no bike shows, concerts, or vendors. It's all riding, and some really great riding too.
This year's ride takes you through places like The Grand Canyon, Payson, Flagstaff, Globe, Roosevelt Lake, Sedona, Jerome, Prescott, and others. The ride from Jerome to Prescott offers some spectacular scenery and lots of twisties.
The ride is in honor of Ryan, a kid who was killed by a drunk driver. All proceeds of the ride are donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
