Tail of the Dragon on Fire
by Steve
Wednesday, April 16, 2008
A brushfire broke out along US 129, the stretch of highway known as "The Tail of the Dragon".
The fire was apparently started by a motorcycle crash. A motorcyclist crashed his bike there, and it caught on fire, and spread to brush.
At least 15 acres have already burned, and the fire is expected to burn through Thursday afternoon.
The motorcyclist was not injured.
This comes at a time when Tennessee Highway Patrol have apparently stepped up patrols on the famous highway, and when locals have been complaining about motorcycle riders going way too fast.
I'm sure this isn't going to help.

Cagers at Greater Risk for Head Injuries
by Steve
Sunday, May 06, 2007
Mike Hays of Nolensville, TN, a volunteer lobbyist for Tennssee ABATE, writes a commentary about the state's repeal of the helmet law, and says that cagers suffer 12 times more head injuries than bikers...Since Tennessee head injury rates in automobiles are more than 12 times higher than that for motorcycles, will we all be wearing helmets in automobiles soon? If the folks who proclaim "if we can just save one life" have their way, it's possible.
This is a point that I've been making on several biker forums across the Internet.
This point was made because people who support helmet laws claim that motorcycle accident victims are a burden on public healthcare. Seems like the bigger burden is on cagers.

Tennessee Bill to Rescind Helmet Law
by Steve
Monday, April 09, 2007
Television station WKRN in Nashville, Tennessee has a video segment about a proposed bill that will change the mandatory helmet law by giving riders over 21 years of age, the choice to ride without...

The video segment is actually part of the station's "That is Messed Up" feature, where the news program focuses on dumb things, in this case, modifying the helmet law.
I guess we know where they stand on this issue.
Interestingly, Tennessee is also the state that is considering a ban on motorcycle wheelies.

Tennessee To Consider Wheelie Ban
by Steve
Tuesday, March 27, 2007
The State of Tennessee is considering amending its vehicle code to outlaw wheelies...The bill's sponsor, Rep. Vince Dean, R-East Ridge, said police can already pull over a driver for such stunts. But adding anti-wheelie language to the law will give officers assurance their cases will stand up in court.
AS IF wheelies are a particular problem on the road.
