Legislators in Texas returned back to the State Capitol to be greeted by thousands of bikers demanding changes to the State's helmet law, among changes to other laws. The group wants the helmet law changed so that riders 21 years of age and older are free to choose to wear a helmet, claiming that police are using the law to harass bikers:
"I am a registered voter, an American citizen, so I should have the right to decide whether or not I want to wear the helmet, not get pulled over and harrassed," Lupita Macias, biker from El Paso, said.
They also want to change driving laws to create stiffer penalities for those who fail to yield on highways.
"We're constantly getting killed. I mean, they run through a stop sign, 'I didn't see him' or they'll even stop and then pull out, 'I didn't see him.' 'I didn't see him.' It's always, 'I didn't see him,'" said another rider.

  1. I'm a trauma nurse. I see you guys all the time. OK, don't wear a helmet. I like what I do. But please carry insurance. I'm paying for your ICU stay and your extensive rehab and your government disability check. Your healing can take years and impacts all those around you, including people you don't even know. Your entitled to make the choice but your also obligated to bear the consequences of your actions without costing others.

  2. Wearing a helmet is like wearing a seatbelt- it should be the law- if not then take away the seatbelt law too...

  4. It is not about the safety issue. I wear a helmet but will fight for our rights as free Americans and Texans for us to make the choice. We have too much government and too many attacks on our freedoms. This issue is ours, the next might be yours. By the people and for the people. I would be more concerned about illegal ailens and their medical treatment at taxpayer expense costing you more of your dollars than the few bikers you mention.
