Rapidly rising through the ranks of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club in the late 90's, Edward "Connecticut Ed" Winterhalder was one of the most powerful Bandidos in the world at the end of the twentieth century.
Since founding the Oklahoma chapter of the Bandidos in early 1997, Ed had been regularly assigned important projects by the worldwide leader of the Bandidos.
It was not unusual for Winterhalder to organize and establish new Bandido chapters, as well as Bandidos support club chapters, all over the world.
But when assigned the unwanted responsibility of overseeing the Bandidos' assimilation of a Canadian motorcycle gang known as the Rock Machine in early 2001, Ed found himself caught between a rock and a hard place.
Teaching ex-Rock Machine members how to be Bandidos was one thing, but doing so while dodging bullets and bombs was another. The new Canadian Bandidos, as members of the Rock Machine, had been embroiled in a deadly war with the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club in which 168 people had died since 1994.
Commonly known as hard core biker gangs, the inner workings of motorcycle clubs such as the Bandidos, the Hells Angels, the Outlaws, the Pagans, the Sons of Silence, and the Mongols have until now been a closely guarded secret.
Determined to set the record straight after leaving the club in late 2003 and as a form of therapy, Winterhalder spent almost two years transcribing the memories of his life. Ultimately, his memoirs evolved into a book called "Out in Bad Standings : Inside The Bandidos Motorcycle Club – The Making Of A Worldwide Dynasty
".
Detailing the establishment and growth of the Bandidos organization in Canada, Europe and Oklahoma, this historical expose of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club gives the reader a rare look into the world of today's 1%er motorcycle gangs, allowing the reader a unique opportunity to ride along as the Bandidos become a dominant force in the MC world.
Published by Blockhead City Press, the 448 page hardcover book contains more than 150 color photographs. "Out In Bad Standings" is available through Barnes & Noble bookstores in the United States, Amazon.com worldwide, Ebay.com worldwide & some Chapters bookstores in Canada.

This book sucks. In the first place it was written by a guy whose status was changed to "bad" due to his own actions. You were a 1%er Ed, by choice, grow up. Wouldn't spend the money, read a borrowed copy.
ReplyDeleteThe first section of the book is mostly news acticles of his problems in Canada. After that the book is great. My whole impression of the club is now changed. A must read for people who love biker stories.
ReplyDeleteim thirsty. i think i'll have a beer.

ReplyDeleteI read the book and thought it was great that there was something out there other then the usual HA books. I would like to read more books like this one.
ReplyDeleteit was a strugle to get through, parts were good to bad they all came from news articles. next time Ed less about how you and the Banditos are so misunderstood and more about what really went down.
ReplyDeleteHow come all the comments are anonymous?
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the book,if it's only half the truth it's worth it.
I´m surprised about the community of BANDIDOS lettin´him write and publish such a book.....bonne chance compadre
ReplyDeleteThis book may not be written extremely well but I think it is am interesting and compelling story. Many older club members are challenged by some younger members' drug habits, criminal and violent ways. In many cases it's no longer about motorcycles and brotherhood.
ReplyDeleteSure there are two sides to every story and I was happy to read about Ed and the Bandidos. It is a very authentic, albeit, difficult read.
I want to meet the author. How can I do that?:
ReplyDeleteI want to meet the author!!
ReplyDeleteoooh bikers are so tuff...
ReplyDeleteed how could you do this to all the broters out there I woudnt read your book again if i had do rat
ReplyDeletehay i havent r ead the book as its not avalable in australia yet but if it is as good as brothers in arms the millpera massacer story it will be a good read carnt wait till i can get hold of a copy an read it as a daughter of a founding mc from here i carnt wait

Hey Lilly
ReplyDeleteWhat's happenen? Aint read the book yet, but I will. The bandits were our worst enemeys. But I grew up with them and was locked down with three of them. And got along with them great my Brothers weren't real happy but I think most of them understood about surving and maintaining the yard. All the other folks fought each other. I guess no one told em that when you hit the yard it's you against the man.
N-E-WAY Lilly would like to check you out. I'M out of Texas, fixen head towards Florida.

I see that you claim to be "an honorary Bandito" Please learn how to spell what you are speaking of before you run your mouth.
ed is a liar i know he lies about me in this so called book what a weak man
ReplyDeleteFellas wake up. This guy got out of a situation he was uncomfortable with for his own reasons. "If a man cant stand alone, dont stand at all." There are too many so called "men" that hide behind others or their own facade. This guy just doesnt want to play the game anymore and made some money. Dont be a hater. It will get you nowhere. ELVIS
ReplyDeleteWho's the stupid ass that thought he could spell!?
ReplyDeleteThe Webster Dictionary says it best! ---
BANDITO!!!
Yea, it's a real cool book, you should totally get ya one!
I hope you don't own a bike dude!
Cause if you ride as bad as you

ReplyDeleteLMAO ~~~ As an avid reader I find it ridiculous when I read such trivial 5th grade BS slamming another for actions they cannot change. We all live in Glass Houses! We all have consequences for our actions! I found this book quite sad as it gave sight in the decline in one man's personal moral code. Whether a individual's decision is correct in anothers eye or not it must stand to have truth within his own principle. This man now has to live with himself knowing the fact that every $ he earns through this book derives from stabbing people (brothers) he chose (not forced) to unite as ONE with. His word and honor cannot be trusted by anyone he comes across. That's the life he now has. I find that extremely Sad! Grade School Class, I have no reason to hide my identity. I am not slamming anyone only Pointing out the Simple Facts that a mindless twit should see.
ReplyDeletei didnt read the whole book but i have the up most respect for this man and his fine organisation
ReplyDeleteTake an oath, pledge your loyalty, and then shit on the brothers. What a traitor! The book is not not about the Bandidos MC ~ this book is about talking when the mouth should be have been kept "shut."
ReplyDeleteS.Y.L.B. not the rats that turn, if they cannot keep their word after giving it to a brother there is no reason to believe anything else they have to say.
Just because a book is written does not mean that it is worth reading. This is one such book.
Does anyone remember a club in Houston (Pasadena) called the Reapers?
ReplyDeleteI do not know why so many people idolize bikers. They are all scum, thieves and liars who ought to be killed.
ReplyDeleteThere is no brotherhood just bunch of goofs who form criminal organizations for their own finanical gain ans something to hide behind.
p.s. there is no honour among thieves, the only reason bikers and other such filth do not rat eachother out even more than they do is out of fear, not out of principle. These people are no better than rapist and child molestors. I laugh everytime one is murdered.
One sided story, every other OMC is shooting at the poor Bandidos, nothing about what they did in retaliation. The Bandidos are what Ed describes the other Outlaw groups as. You catch it on one of the photograghs of JW Rock, killed by another Bandido. Make no mistakes these guys are THUGS
ReplyDeleteIf you know my brother Jim Quinn ( Dagger) Please have him contact me @ 509-398-1284

The book is full of lies, written like crap by a man that turned on his brothers. Hope he has a deep hole to hide in. Asshole!
ReplyDeleteJunkman : Mississippi
Though it may be interesting, bike gangs in Canada are the most violent and the most deadly.
ReplyDeleteThough many Banditos have been murdered in Ontario lately, I believe that the violence is going to skyrocket. The American clubs are just boy scout groups compared to these ones.
Call me stupid, But; I would not be too proud of it and frankly I am shocked... as a long time Old Lady (from years ago) I do not understand why you would do this book? For the Money and fame? Good luck?????? From a Very Tall Gal from the Pacific N.W. that still cares for the club and always will ! Times sure have changed and not for the better. S
ReplyDeleteONCE A RAT ALWAYS A RAT...
ReplyDeleteNo matter what you like or dislike about a mc this guy is a trader and wrote a book about himself. It only tells you about what he says he did no one really knows but him. so read the book or not dont beleave everything you reed. This guy gave his word and went back on it. this is not for kids it is real life
ReplyDeleteThis is a free country - I choose not to buy his book. He chose to become a Bandido - He did not honor his commitment to himself or the Club. As a former US Marine commitment is what makes this nation great. Gives us the freedom to choose - to Ride - To be a patcholder or 1%. Or just independent of the planet. For those of you that post anonymous - what BS - the whole planet is posting anonymous - if you have an opinion why would you be afraid for the world to know who you are. I have been riding HD's since I was 12 - first suicide when 14 - had about 25 of them. Prefer them over cages anyday - average over 1000 miles a month with a job and a large family. Yep - I AM A CITIZEN - but my father was a Bandido - not a child molester - Not even a convicted felon. Just a guy that loved his Brothers and His Motorcycles - I Did not turn me into a freak - or a felon - or any other bullshit - I am a Former SGT USMC - College educated citizen - that will carry the love of motorcycles to my grave - and intend to be buried with mine. I take my kids riding anytime I get a chance - and still bang out the 1000 mile days - followed by a cold beer. I could write some fiction about the shit I saw - make a few bucks - for what - All I had was a great time as a kid - LLR to all that choose the life - to those that do not honor their commitments - you have to live with yourselves.

In reply to Michelle asking about the Reapers, I know the Reapers. What is it that you want to know? You can email me at sarahmantana@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI borrowed a copy while in prison.personally,I think he is a sell out and he revealed just enough for me to know that he is not a true brother. He is a sellout and one of these days someone will show up and teach him a lesson on keeping his mouth shut.To me,he's a punk.
ReplyDeleteok,Ed is a traitor and he has no honor and he should always remeber this,a coward dies a thousand deaths.everytime he looks himself in the mirror he knows he was and is a coward for turning on his bro's.he made a commitment to join the Bandidos and then when the shit got too much to handle he turns on his brothers.he may be making money off of this rag and his patch but he's just like sammy the bull.in my book he's a bitch and has no honor.
ReplyDeleteThis author is classless. He has shown no respect for his brothers, the mother of his child or his current girlfriend. What makes him think that he is so important? His book is a rambling account of the truth as perceived by himself. He is a self absorbed jerk with a big mouth. I don't wonder that he is out in bad standings.
ReplyDeleteBetty Holsen
I remember the Bandido's growing up in the strets of south side San Antonio and the protection they gave to my family and neighborhood, Im now a college grad and HR Manager for a major corp. Im thinking about tossing this 8-5, groundhog day lifestyle and pursuing prospecting with the club. With my knowledge I can be an asset to them for sure. S.Y.L.B BFFB
ReplyDeleteWhat is a 0% bandito? I have heard of 1% never 0%?
ReplyDeleteWhats wrong with a good old time stomping for a rat and sell out
ReplyDeleteI hung out at a bar in marysville washington with a few brothers every now and then with no problems, unless a dumbass walked in.
on page 365 when it talks about the deal about great fall's montana my dads name is in it it is a great book
ReplyDeleteto all the people who dont know shit look at sunny' bitch ass he has put out three books for one thing ed has up right respect with most the bandits i know so if yhou dont know shit keep your lips shut there no snitchin in that book
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know "Nice Mike" Bales? Got a photo?
ReplyDeleteI liked the book, and its nice to read about clubs other than the mighty HA. I dont buy calling the guy a rat, because he didnt write anything that would get any of his brothers in trouble. I am sure a few Bandido's (not Bandito) dont like a former member, out in bad standing, saying anything about the club. I can understand it, but thats too bad. From what I can tell he never should have been put out in bad standing in the first place. Sounds too me like the bad guys in the club didnt like him cuz he's one of the good guys, and he spoke his mind. So many "brothers" are afraid to speak out, and too me they are the rats. Just because we join these organizations it don't mean we stop being men. So all you anonymous people out there calling him a rat, I ask is he the rat, or you?
ReplyDeleteDeath before Dishonor Ed. If you understood them words, you would have never written the book. You have never, and will never be one of us.

I knew Ed years ago before he rode with the Red & Gold. He was then and I am sure still is now an honorable man who truly knows the meaning of brotherhood. His book did nothing but give "his" perspective on events and he made that clear up front. If you missed the point of the book, read it again.
ReplyDeleteRide safe Ed.

Brotherhood? Well as my old pappy used to say when the money hits the floor honor hits the door. Lot's of prople make choices they later regret. Lot's of folks change course in life and leave thier past behind...but punks that sell those that were thier family out are just sad.

ReplyDeleteBandidos have been run completely out of Canada by HA and are nearly out of Oklahoma (run out by the Outlaws). Even in their home state of TX, the Banshees (HA supporters) are running all over the place. For a bunch of hard-assed 1%ers, they sure are having a tough time handling their own turf.
ReplyDeleteAll 1% MCs nowadays are organizations devoted to supporting a bunch of criminals, dope-dealers, whoremongers, and extortionists. Their "brotherhood" used to be all about bikes, freedom, and riding -- now it's just another dodge to keep people from ratting them out. Think Mafia "omerta" here. If there was any justice, the old-school bikers would run this new generation of maggotry back to their ghettos and street corners. This guy didn't sell out a brotherhood. Just another greaseball crime family.
Not all bikers are scum, drug dealers, or criminals. Some CLUBS are still full of honor and brotherhood, even the 1%ers. When the chips are down, I want these guys at my back! Don't judge what you don't understand. Don't think all are like the few. They aren't! If you don't like the life, get out, but don't turn on those that stood with you. Be a MAN and grow some balls!

ReplyDeleteAs far as this book goes, I can't say I read it. But it's a shame that what's supposed to be a book review has turned into a bunch of mindless idiots talking bad about the Bandidos. My father is a retired 40+ year member, one of the founders who started the club with Ronnie Hodge. He is an honest, hard working man who loves his family and friends. I've met MANY Bandidos and grown up around them. I have the utmost respect for them. It's sad to see all these people saying negative things about something they don't know anything about.

I'm a Daughter of a former Bandito, my father recently passed away in July. It took me awhile to come around to even read the book because I thought the club was horrible it took my dad away from me when I was little. Then I read the book and It just gave me a different outlook on the club. both good and bad.
ReplyDelete-Former Bandito Daughter
Well, i came upon this site looking for reviews and info on this book before i go purchase it. Hmm!? My husband is thinking of joining (hang around-prospect)so i'm not sure if it's a good thing or not. We love to ride and hang out with many of their supporters but not sure i want the full blown Bandido patch on him.....not sure if it's a good thing or if it will effect our marriage. Any advice out there for me.

ReplyDeleteDallas chapter of the Banshee's was the fourth chapter founded. New Orleans is the Mother Chapter, first President was Harry Thompson, GBNF. Houston(2nd)came next then Baton Rouge(3rd).
As for the founding of the Bandido's:
Don Chambers = Mother GBNF
Ronnie Hodge = Step-Mother GBNF
Ronnie was not a founder. No disrespect meant just a fact.

The organization has bad seeds just like any other MC does. They aren't all bad people though, most are caring and do good things for their local community. Long live the Red and Gold. ;)
